History of the Apache in India / Indian Air Force
-
-
India signed for 22 AH-64E(I) Apaches under a defence procurement order in 2015.
-
The first Apache was delivered to India in May 2019.
-
On 3 September 2019, the Indian Air Force formally inducted the first batch of Apaches into its 125 Helicopter Squadron at Pathankot, Punjab.
-
Later, a second squadron—137 Helicopter Squadron—was raised for Apache operations, expanding the IAF’s attack helicopter capabilities.
-
Indian-manufacturing plays a part in Apache production too: Boeing and Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) set up a joint venture called Tata–Boeing Aerospace (TBAL) in Hyderabad for manufacturing Apache fuselages. This facility has delivered Indian-made fuselages to Boeing and is a global supplier.
-
History of the AH-64 Apache
-
The AH-64 Apache is an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter first developed by Hughes Helicopters (later taken over by McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing).
-
Its prototype, the YAH-64, first flew on 30 September 1975, and in 1982 it was approved for full-scale production.
-
It entered operational service in April 1986.
-
Over the years, the Apache has been upgraded through multiple versions — notably the AH-64D Longbow with enhanced radar and targeting systems, and the more advanced AH-64E “Guardian” variant, which adds better sensors, networking, and performance improvements.
