Some aircraft become legends not because they are glamorous, but because they are dependable, versatile, and always present where they are needed most. The Dornier Do 228 is one such aircraft. The Dornier Do 228 Engraved Whiskey Glass pays tribute to an airplane that quietly became one of India’s most trusted aerial workhorses—across civil, military, and humanitarian roles.

Precision-etched in clean aviation line art, this glass celebrates an aircraft that has served India’s skies for decades, from remote islands to high-altitude borders.

Why the Dornier Do 228 is special in India

  • An aircraft India made its own
The Dornier Do 228 first entered Indian service in the 1980s, but its story here goes far deeper. India didn’t just operate the aircraft—it built it. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) produced the Do 228 under licence, making it one of the most successful Indo-European aviation collaborations.

  • Guardian of India’s coastlines
For the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, the Do 228 became a vital maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft. Flying long hours over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, it performed coastal surveillance, search-and-rescue, pollution monitoring, and anti-smuggling missions. Many naval aviators recall it as the aircraft that “always came back,” no matter the weather.

  • The island lifeline
In the Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands, the Do 228 earned a special reputation as a lifeline aircraft—transporting medical supplies, personnel, and essential cargo where larger aircraft could not operate. For island communities, the sound of its propellers often meant connection to the mainland.

  • A quiet military enabler
The Indian Air Force operated the Do 228 in transport and utility roles, valuing its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It could operate from rough, semi-prepared runways—an invaluable trait in India’s diverse terrain.

  • A platform that keeps evolving
Decades after its induction, the Do 228 continues to serve in upgraded forms. New avionics, glass cockpits, and mission systems have extended its life, proving that good design doesn’t age—it adapts.

  • An unsung hero
Unlike fighters or airliners, the Do 228 rarely makes headlines. Yet it has logged thousands of quiet missions—saving lives, protecting coastlines, and keeping far-flung regions connected. Among aviators, it is often called “the aircraft that does the job without fuss.”

The Making

Each Glass Collection concept starts with procuring detailed blueprints of the design and then designing the cuts on Adobe Illustrator. These drawings are then passed on to the laser which then cuts fine lines on the glass. These are then hand engraved again to a shimmering finish with brilliant clarity.

The video shown here is of the hand engraving process which follows the laser cut.
