Why INS Vikramaditya is legendary

The flagship of a modern navy

Commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2013, INS Vikramaditya marked a new chapter in India's maritime history. Measuring nearly 284 metres in length and displacing over 44,000 tonnes, she became the largest warship ever to serve under the Indian flag at the time.

More than just a ship, Vikramaditya became the centerpiece of India's Carrier Battle Group—capable of projecting air power hundreds of kilometres beyond the fleet.

Home of India's naval fighters

The true strength of Vikramaditya lies not in the ship itself—but in the aircraft that launch from her deck.

The carrier serves as the operational home of the MiG-29K, giving the Indian Navy a powerful fleet air defence and strike capability.

Alongside the MiG-29K, helicopters such as the Westland Sea King and Kamov Ka-31 extend the carrier's reach for anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and fleet protection.

Together, they transform Vikramaditya into a complete floating airbase.
