Our NDA Sudan Block Engraved Whiskey Glass pays tribute to one of India's most recognisable military landmarks — the magnificent main building of the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla, near Pune.
For NDA alumni, it is a piece of home. For serving officers and veterans, it represents a shared heritage. And for anyone who admires India's military traditions, it is a reminder of the institution that has helped shape generations of military leadership.
For those who have walked its corridors, stood before its imposing façade, or looked up at its dome with the pride of an NDA cadet, the Sudan Block is far more than a building.
It is a symbol of beginnings.
The story of the Sudan Block begins in the aftermath of the Second World War.
The war demonstrated the importance of closer cooperation between the Army, Navy and Air Force. India's military leadership recognised that future officers would benefit from training together before specialising in their respective Services.
In 1945, a committee was established to develop a plan for an institution that would bring the three Services together under a common training system.
The Joint Services Wing began functioning at Dehradun in January 1949. Khadakwasla, near Pune, was selected as the permanent home for the new academy, offering the space and terrain needed for a comprehensive tri-service training establishment.
On 6 October 1949, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone at Khadakwasla.
The National Defence Academy was formally inaugurated on 16 January 1955 by Morarji Desai, then Chief Minister of Bombay State.
India's ambitious vision of joint military training had found its permanent home.
The building's name tells a remarkable story of friendship, gratitude and shared sacrifice.
During the Second World War, Indian troops served in the East African campaign, including operations associated with the liberation of Sudan from Italian occupation.
In recognition of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers, the Sudanese government made a generous financial contribution towards the construction of the National Defence Academy.
The gift amounted to £100,000, with the portion allocated to India following Partition helping fund the academy's construction.
The main building was subsequently named the Sudan Block in honour of this contribution and the sacrifices it commemorated.
Standing prominently at the heart of the academy, the Sudan Block is among the most recognisable buildings in India's defence-training landscape.
Its imposing façade, classical arches, pillars, verandahs and distinctive dome give it a dignified presence befitting the institution it houses.
The building's position within the academy was carefully considered. The original campus plan used the natural ridge running through the estate as its central axis, with the main building forming a key part of the academy's architectural composition.
The result is an environment where the architecture itself reflects a sense of order, permanence and purpose.
The NDA Sudan Block Engraved Glass features an engraved illustration of the iconic main building of the National Defence Academy.
Created for those who value the history and traditions of India's Armed Forces, the design captures the architectural character of this landmark and its association with generations of future military leaders.
The permanent engraving gives the glass a distinctive, understated finish, making it a meaningful addition to a home bar, office, study or military memorabilia collection.
Some gifts are appreciated. Others bring back an entire chapter of life.
This glass is designed for the latter.
It makes a thoughtful gift for:
